Helium balloons are one of the most popular decorations for parties, weddings, and other special occasions. Helium balloons are one of the most popular items that we sell here at Misty Daydream. But have you ever wondered what they’re made of? Here’s a quick overview of how helium balloons are made, straight from the experts at Misty Daydream.
The Balloon Material
All helium balloons are made of latex, a natural material that comes from rubber trees. The production process begins by tapping into these trees and collecting the latex sap, which is then transported to a factory.
There, the latex sap is mixed with other chemicals to create a liquid latex that can be easily blown up into a balloon shape. Once the balloon has been blown up, it is then left to cure in a controlled environment. This curing process makes the balloon stronger and less likely to pop.
Once the balloon has cured, it is then ready to be filled with helium gas. The gas is what gives the balloon its lifting power and allows it to float. Helium is a non-flammable, odourless gas that is safe for both people and animals.
So how does this gas get turned into those beautiful floating spheres that we all love so much? Well, it all starts with a process called fractional distillation. This is when natural gas is cooled until it liquefies, and then it is passed through a filter which separates out the different gases. Helium is one of the lighter gases, so it rises to the top and is collected.
Once the helium has been collected, it is stored in large tanks under high pressure. When you come to purchase a helium balloon from us, we use a special pump to fill the balloon with the gas. The balloon will only stay inflated for a few hours though, as the helium slowly escapes through the pores in the latex.
After the balloon has been filled with helium, it’s time for the fun part – decorating! This is where you can let your creativity run wild and turn your plain helium balloon into something truly special. At Misty Daydream, we offer a wide range of balloon decoration options, from simple banners and streamers to more elaborate arches and sculptures.
